Despite this, the Port of Mombasa has made significant improvements in recent years, reducing the waiting times for Ugandan cargo and introducing a one-stop border post to streamline customs processes.

The Expansion of Port Bell

Port Bell, located on Lake Victoria, is Uganda's only inland harbor. It handles mainly regional trade and has limited capacity. However, the government of Uganda has recognized the potential for Port Bell to become a hub for the transport of goods to and from the rest of the country. Plans have been drawn up for the expansion of Port Bell, including the construction of additional berths and the dredging of the lake to increase its depth. The expansion will also include the construction of a railway connection to the Kenyan border, further improving connectivity.

The Development of a New Port at Bukasa

In addition to the expansion of Port Bell, the government of Uganda has plans to build a new port at Bukasa, on the shores of Lake Victoria. The Bukasa Port project aims to significantly increase the country's trade capacity by providing a modern, deep-water port that can handle larger vessels. Construction is expected to commence in 2021 and will be carried out by a Chinese construction company.
